Type 4b hair: Musician Esperanza Spalding
The first step in the battle to love your natural hair and treat it with tender care is knowing your hair type. I have always heard about 1a, 2b, 3a and 4b when describing hair type and curl patterns, but I have finally taken the time to discover mine. This not only helps in the maintenance of loose hair but in understanding how your hair will be when loc'd (if that is your goal one day).

I am a mixture 4a-4b

4 Facts

Type 4 is kinky, or very tightly curled, with a clearly visible curl pattern
Circumference: Crochet needle or even smaller
The hair is very wiry, very tightly coiled and very, very fragile
Type 4 hair can range from fine/thin to wiry/coarse with lots and lots of strands densely packed together
Type 4 hair has fewer cuticle layers than any other hair type, which means that it has less natural protection from the damage you inflict by combing, brushing, curling, blow-drying and straightening it
Type 4 hair is known to shrink up to 75% of the actual hair length
There are two Type 4 subtypes:
4a: Tightly coiled hair that, when stretched, has an "S" pattern, much like curly hair. It tends to have more moisture than 4b; has a definite curl pattern

Winter White, Sisterlocks and Holiday Hair Accessories

Merry Christmas!

Make a big bang with almost no manipulation of your kinky tresses with hair accessories. I recently bought two high impact hair accessories from Aldo shoe store for $10. One has mundo flare and I will be revealing later on this season, possibly on New Years and the other is a pearl and faux diamond embossed gem. At times as little as two minutes yields a cute all day hairdo!

Black Dating in a Hip Hip Society

I met at least 10 girls in college that thought and/or lived this skit!

I love products but I have keep my recommendations for those with loose hair or more mature locks. Thank goodness my baby sister is repping the loose hair and my best-friend the more settled locks! I was devastated by some recent news of my past consultant's techniques so bare with me as I more forward, grow and learn!

I love products but I have keep my recommendations for those with loose hair or more mature locks. Thank goodness my baby sister is repping the loose hair and my best-friend the more settled locks! I was devastated by some recent news of my past consultant's techniques so bare with me as I more forward, grow and learn!

The woman that started my sisterlocks is a master braider in addition to a sisterlock consultant and has a booming and booked solid for weeks business.  Because of the aforementioned scenario coupled with a canceled early November appointment, I had an emergency visit to another consultant in order to have extremely well groomed hair for a series of business meetings that I had scheduled for early December.  Much to my dismay, I discovered via this new consultant that my much adored SL consultant may have been jacking up my locks. She kindly informed me that:
  1. I should not be loosing as many locks as I have at my edges
  2. That some of my locks at my perimeter were much too small or thinning
  3. That my parts were loosing their patented SL uniformity
  4. That I was using too many products too soon and should have been getting more guidance
  5. That my hair was a combination of pattern 3 and pattern 4
  6. That she could repair my locks if they were to pop or fall out
That she has had other clients from my first consultant that has had all the issues that I am experiencing, including herself. I was mortified to discover my locks were in such poor shape. I did have some fears about my original consultant because she has such a dramatically receding hair line but I thought that maybe she had a pre-sisterlocking condition. This new consultant has such healthy hair and has been doing SL's for over a decade. I am optimistic going forward about my hair! I WILL NOT LOOSE MY HAIR LINE!
