The Smile of a Woman Whose Hair is in Repair

The smile of a woman whose hairline is finally growing back!
Yesterday I attempted my first wash and go in a long time. The reason why the wash and go was needed, buildup, caused a big issue. Washing took more time than I had that morning and I kept having to wash certain trouble spots with shampoo and water after leaving the shower. I could see I dislodged grey goop of buildup from my scalp to the body of my locks. It hit me that I had not had a quick clarifying cleanser on hand in a while. Baking soda is awesome but that takes time and I could not afford to smell like vinegar at work until my hair dried.

But I made it work and left the trouble spots that I did not have time to really cleanse icky and for later. I made sure to really massage the dirt out of the visible areas.

Went to Work Without "Combing" my Hair & I Did Not  Even Realize It. My husband is sick and so is our son, I left the house yesterday in such a Monday rush that I didn't take a moment to situate my hair. I was so busy with work that it was the end of the day before I realized that I had not even touched my hair! I don't think I looked half bad, could have been worse...

The steam from the show must have worked it's magic again.

Herb and plant infusions that repair wear and tear to your hair can help you start with healthy hair at the root if consumed as a part of a balance diet. Think about what you eat, go for nutritionally complex meals in lieu of chemically complex meals.

Healthy Hair to the Root

Well Thank Goodness It's Friday! Feeling good, feeling great, feeling good, feeling great, how are you?  Today we picked up our first box of organic fruits and veggies from Annie's Organic Buying Club, a group of people who buy mostly organic fruits and veggies at drastically discounted prices. Our first box is so yummy looking! Tomorrow we will be making a salad full of yummy organic fruits and super leafy greens with a raspberry vinaigrette and for dinner a nice hearty crab stew.

I can't put all this work into healthy hair externally without working on health internally.

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) is one of my favorite products. I make the best marinades with it as a base, it has wonderful uses around the house and it is an awesome hair care product. ACV has an acidity similar to that of natural hair and acts as a conditioner, cleanser and germ killer. Some have noted that the use of ACV has helped in fighting scalp issues, help reduce DHT which causes the hair follicle to shrink and lead to hair loss and dandruff. ACV also increases shine and removes buildup!

My focus this weekend is buildup removal, shine, conditioning and color. Keep the following in mind if you are considering creating your own concoction:

Here are some recommended herbs to use with apple cider vinegar:

For
  • dark hair- Parsley, Rosemary, Sage
  • light hair- Chamomile, Flannel Mullein, Marigold
  • red hair- Henna
  •  oily hair- Lavender, Thyme, Witch Hazel, Yarrow
  •  dry hair- Marigold
  •  brittle hair-Horsetail
Make your own herbal hair rinse: Place 2 tablespoons of the dried herb (or herb mixture) into a muslin bag or tea ball and put in a warmed tea pot. Pour 2 Cups of boiling water over the herbs and infuse for 2 hours. Allow the liquid to cool then pour it into a jar. Add 2 cups of apple cider vinegar and mix well.

To add extra fragrance to the herbal rinse, try adding a few drops of lavender or lemon or rose essential oils.

Create quicker concoction by using essential oils. Just add 5 drops of the essential oil to 1 cup of ACV. When ready to rinse hair, take 1 tablespoon of this mixture and add it to 1 cup of warm water.

These Essential Oils work best with ACV: Lavender Lemon Rose Rosemary Sage

I will be doing this soon and will follow up with a post once I see the result after a couple of days. It is recommend to use no more than every 2 weeks. I will also be adding aloe juice for extra conditioning. If you prefer to buy it pre-made, I found some products on Amazon and added the links below.

The past two days I had been enjoying Hispanicize in Miami. Hispanicize is the premier conference for Latinos in media,  marketing and film. Thanks to Clever Girl Collective I was able to attend for free and it was a great experience! While there I had the chance to chillax in the Target Luxe Lounge! Target maybe my favorite brand of all time and they do all the right things when it comes to investing in media marketing and community!

Because I was running late and had to function on but a few measly hours of rest due to a toddler with a cold, I simply finger combed my hair into a simple side part. I also sprayed in a little Jane Carter Solution Leave-In conditioner for a fresh scent and shine. I've been sweating my fat off at the gym recently and did not get a chance to cleanse my locs.

I had another re-tightening this weekend at Nubian Knots. The Locs are great and so is my new position. I went into further detail about making my larger "brotherlock" like sisterlocks smaller. It involves branching off the lock at the root and creating a new lock while maintaining the signature sisterlock grid.
