DIY
I've had my sisterlocks 10 years this March and it was during a tough season where I was between locticians and money was tight because of a failed startup, that I had to either lose my locs or figure out how to retighten them. This was 9 years ago. There were not as many great DIY content videos and very few consistent sister- and mico-loc bloggers, but I was able to figure it out and saved my locs. I eventually found a new loctician and restarted my career but I still would retighten my locs from time to time.

I had a 6 week retighten appointment booked for the weekend after the shelter in place mandate was issued by the California governor because of COVID-19. So I found myself leaning on my DIY skills to save my locs again. Full disclosure, I didn't get to even start retightening until 2 weeks later, so my locs were dramatically overdue and I ended up merging at least once to save some of my really thin locs in the front, but I don't feel the stress and hopelessness I see being voiced in Sisterlocked's group by newbies who don't yet know how to self-maintain their locs.

Here are some basics on self retightening and some great how-to videos to start your journey.

Full disclosure: I have never taken a Sisterlock training course and I am not a licensed cosmetologist. If you can, discuss with your loctician and proceed at your own risk. This is just knowledge accumulated via trial and error and conversations with professionals.

Tools

I have purchased, created and misplaced so many locs tools it is laughable. Though my favorite go-to tool has remained blunt Steel Yarn Knitting Needles ($2) or the Nappy Loc Tool ($24) there are so many to choose from nowadays. These knitting needles were the only thing I could find a decade ago before you all these awesome loc tools on amazon for less than $15, see a list of some options I found online:

Other supplies

  • Spray bottle - to moisten locs you are working on and prevent breakage. I love this continuous water mister, it's a little fancier than usual and I keep distilled water in it. The silver bottle pictured above has my special moisture mix.
  • Hair Clips - to isolate locs and prevent the accidental merging of locs. I got lazy and didn't use it recently and accidentally merged two locs.

To start

  1. Deep clean locs, I usually use a clarifying shampoo right before retightening so I don't lock in more dirt and oil into my locs by retightening on dirty hair
  2. Towel dry excess moisture
  3. Section hair into four or more sections, leaving the first section you plan to work on out
  4. Use hair clips to section off the first loc(s) you want to work on and begin
To retighten locs

Let's start with this video of interlocking traditional locs, which is very similar to how I retighten my sisterlocks.

Always visualize the loc pattern as the face of a clock, so for sisterlock pattern three you enter at 9 o'clock, 6 o'clock, 9 o'clock again, and 12 o'clock. I don't pay attention to patterns anymore and I don't even remember what mine was or if I was ever told (my first consultant was no about empowering or educating). So I just focus on rotations. A rotation would be entering from the left side, down, the right side, and up. Similar to the video above and repeating until retighten to the scalp.

Remember to

Always enter the loc at the scalp. As you pull your loc through, always push loop down towards the loc to eliminate gaps in your lock. Repeat until you are at the scalp and cannot complete another rotation. Your retightening should resemble a fishtail and feel like a tight cord.

What not to do!

Learn from my novice DIY mistakes in this video below. I did not isolate my locs and almost merged them (more than once). I was retightening on dry locs, which encourages breakage. My eyebrows were too thin and I was not taking my time. (LOL)

Retightening Your Locs At Home

A DIY herbal hair rinse recipe that nourishes your scalp, increases shine, and strengthens hair naturally.

Most hair care items, even the natural ones, strip the natural oils from our. A vast majority of shampoos also contain ingredients that coat the hair to replace the natural and vital oils that they strip. A great herbal hair rinse features nutritive herbs that feed the scalp for healthier, stronger hair. The apple cider vinegar softens and cleanses, without removing the scalp’s natural oils.

Herbal Hair Rinse Ingredients

  • 3 TBSP dried rosemary
  • 4 TBSP dried lavender
  • 1/4 cup nettle
  • 1/4 cup horsetail
  • 3 TBSP dried basil
  • 3 to 3 1/2 cups apple cider vinegar
  • distilled water

Rinse Instructions

  1. In a quart-size glass jar combine all of the herbs. Cap the jar and shake to mix.
  2. Fill the jar 1 inch from the top with apple cider vinegar. Cap it tightly, and shake well.
  3. Keep the jar in a cool, dark place for 2-4 weeks. Shake daily. After the first few days you may notice that the herbs have absorbed some of the vinegar. Just top your jar off with some more vinegar so that it stays about 1 inch from the top.
  4. After the herbs have infused into the vinegar for a few weeks, strain them with a cheesecloth or a clean old t-shirt.
  5. Store completed herbal hair rinse in a clean glass jar. When ready to use dilute it with 1 part of distilled water. The vinegar concentrate will preserve indefinitely; however water will encourage mold and bacterial growth, so don’t store the rinse pre-diluted with water.

How to Use Herbal Hair Rinse

Mix equal parts of the prepared herbal hair rinse and water together in an empty clean container. Apply diluted rinse to clean, wet locs as leave-in or briefly rinse with distilled water.

Use the following as a guide but you may need less or more rinse depending on the texture and thickness of your hair.

Very Short hair: 1/4 cup infused vinegar to 1/4 cup water
Short to chin-length hair: 1/2 cup infused vinegar to 1/2 cup water
Shoulder length hair: 2/3 cup infused vinegar to 2/3 cup water
Longer hair: 1 cup infused vinegar to 1 cup water

Tip your head back and slowly pour over locs until saturated.

The benefits of the Herbs

A great herbal rinse should be infused with beneficial herbs that help hair in a variety of ways:

Rosemary
Adding rosemary stimulates hair follicles and encourages hair growth while strengthening hair at the root. It is also a slight astringent, which works to strengthen the hair follicles and prevent hair loss.

Lavender
Lavender calms inflammation on the scalp and increases circulation for better growth.

Horsetail
Containing high amounts of silica to strengthen hair strands. Horsetail is rich in calcium, magnesium, bioflavonoids, chromium, potassium, copper, and iron.

Nettle
A wonder herb full of vitamins and minerals. You’ll find vitamin A carotenoids, vitamins B, C, D, and K, as well as chromium, silica, calcium, magnesium, boron and others. By nourishing and increasing the health of the scalp, nettle makes hair naturally stronger and more vibrant.

Basil
Similar to the other herbs in the mix, basil feeds the scalp, but plays a special role as it also detoxes the body by removing toxins and heavy metals. Basil also promotes hair growth as it nourishes with vitamins A and C, flavonoids, and polyphenolic acids.

Apple cider vinegar
An apple cider vinegar helps clarify and smooth hair cuticles – the secret to shiny hair!

Additional Tips

  • Use the herbal rinse bi-weekly or monthly according to preference.
  • Use this hair rinse in-between shampooing.

Vita, hair color queen, licensed cosmetologist and sisterlock trainee shares how she colors her beautiful blonde locs:

I have been sisterlocked since July 2015. My journey has been extremely fulfilling to say the least. I have gone through an array of different colors for my locks. Blue, purple, green, pink and the list goes on. The color that has stuck with me for the longest has been blonde. I'm asked all the time how did I achieve my blonde hair, here is my process:

In order to maintain the health of my hair I continue maintenance with Olaplex No. 3 and hot oil treatments. I Also moisturize daily with rose water.

Quick Tip: ALWAYS put oil on your locks for moisture while hair is wet to lock the oils in. Otherwise putting oil on dry hair negates the purpose. For more questions visit me on Instagram @beautyandkinks.

Various people and cultures around the world refer to bentonite clay as "healing clay" and with good reason. Having both amazing internal and topical uses, bentonite clay has been used for centuries but has become super popular amongst wellness enthusiasts. Composed of ash made from volcanos, one of the largest known sources of bentonite clay is found in Fort Benton, Wyoming (hence the name).

Internally bentonite clay benefits your body by producing an "electrical charge" when combined with liquid and seeking out and binding with toxins, chemicals, impurities and 'heavy metals" in your body and is then able to draw them out of your body. So internally the benefits of bentonite clay can include:
  • providing minerals for the body (bentonite clay is known for being abundant in minerals like calcium, magnesium, silica, sodium, copper, iron and potassium)
  • speeding up recovery from vomiting and diarrhea
  • fighting pathogens responsible for disease, like E. coli and a virus that can cause staph infection.
  • and helping with digestive disturbances like constipation, acid reflux, gas and bloating
To use internally: mix 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of bentonite clay throughly with water, drink immediately, and use as often as daily. You can also use as a homemade mouthwash to detox your teeth and gums.

Skin and Hair
Externally bentonite clay is the ultimate skin detox! It is able to bind to bacteria and toxins that live on the surface of the skin and within pores and it even extract these from the pores. This can help to reduce acnes, redness, and even fight allergic reactions from lotions or face washes. The clay serves as antibiotic treatment topically, which can calm skin infections. So not only do I use on my face and underarms but also on my inner thighs and butt before showering. It also pulls all the crap out of your scalp and hair leaving it shinny and noticeably softer!

For your skin and hair the uses of bentonite clay can include:
  • as a face mask by mixing bentonite clay with apple cider vinegar until you form a paste and applying topically to your face and body. Leave on for 20 minutes and rinse away. This can be done weekly.
  • as a hair detox since bentonite clay pulls chemicals and metals out from our bodies like a magnet. When applied to locs, bentonite clay pulls dirt, lint and product build-up from our hair. When you apply bentonite clay, be sure your locs are freshly shampooed. Mix equal parts of the clay with apple cider vinegar (until consistency of yogurt) and 10 drops of essential oil (like Rosemary for hair growth) in a non-metal bowl with a non-metal spoon. (If you use metal, you will activate or deactivate certain properties in the bentonite clay). Apply to hair and leave for 20 minutes, it will magically lift lint to surface. Be sure to thoroughly rinse! Optional: Rinse with a cup of water with 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar added. See my other favorite loc detoxes here.
  • as a skin softening and relaxing detox bath by adding about 1/4 cup of Bentonite Clay to a bathwater.
Bentonite clay benefits the body because it is able to produce a natural charge that is electrical when in contact with liquid — very similar to how earthing (touching your bare feet to the earth) works.

Important: Don't let healing clays come in to contact with anything metal, this will reduce the effectiveness. I opt to use class, plastic and wood when working with bentonite clay.

Thank you Tom’s of Maine for sponsoring this post.

Brushing with Tom’s of Maine Luminous White Toothpaste has been a real confidence boost. In the past, during random conversations, I often find myself staring at people’s teeth and shocked at how white their teeth are. Then I think: if I’m staring at their mouth and thinking this, are they staring at my mouth and thinking, “dang her teeth are yellow!” This thought cycle always unnerves me and my words are slightly more mumbled as I do the opposite of baring my teeth.

I will be the first to admit I’ve had a pretty mediocre oral care regime. My parents never hounded me about brushing or flossing, even though I have my Dad’s weak, sensitive and stereotypical British teeth that I did not start to take better care of until recent years. So on top of getting cavities filled, and planning to get adult braces, I am also working to reverse years of staining with a non-abrasive home whitening regime. Since I’m very conscious about what I put in my body and very dedicated to living green and minimizing me and my family’s exposure harsh ingredients and products, I opted to whiten naturally. Here are my favorite ways to naturally whiten my teeth at home:

1.       Toms, because whiter teeth and great oral health starts with the right toothpaste. Tom’s most advanced natural whitening toothpaste, Luminous White, is safe on enamel and safe for everyday use. Luminous White toothpaste uses two types of high cleaning silica to gently and safely remove surface stains. And all of the ingredients are naturally derived, unlike conventional whitening toothpastes.

2.  Whitening Foods provided by mother nature offers as options many fruits, veggies and other natural items as viable options to protect your teeth from decay and keep them from discoloring. These natural foods include:

- Raw Broccoli can naturally clean teeth while eating with nutrients that can coat your enamel to minimize stains while fighting harmful bacteria, and acid erosion.

- Strawberries mixed with baking soda and applied as a paste is another good option

- The inside white portion of an orange skin can be rubbed on teeth.

- Apple Cider Vinegar is a teeth and gum cleanser that not only prevents discoloration but can reverse some yellowing that has happened over time because of the following naturally occurring ingredients: acetic acid, potassium, magnesium, probiotics and enzymes.

On the same note, avoid stain causing foods like wine, coffee, tea, sports drinks, or candy that can cause tooth discoloration.

3. Overall Health Management because acid reflux and other ailments can affect oral health so keeping your overall health intact has multiple cosmetic rewards.

4. Using a Straw can help prevent stains by keeping stain keeping dyes away from your teeth.

5. Monthly oil pulling for about 20 minutes in the morning prior to eating. Oil pulling is an age-old remedy that uses natural clean and detox both teeth and gums and whiten your teeth.

Long-term healthy and whiter teeth can be achieved with activities that can be seamlessly woven into your daily routine, all you have to do is take the first step.

Did I miss anything, what are your favorite natural ways to whiten your teeth?

DIY Lavender Linen Spray

A refreshing natural and lovely lavender linen spray that actually lingers for a reasonable amount of time.

To make you will need:
  • 15 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
  • 2 tablespoons of Vodka or Rubbing Alcohol
  • 2 cups of Distilled Water

The husband and I aren't drinker of alcoholic beverages so I bought a bottle of vodka specifically for this and other DIY household projects (surface cleaners etc). I mixed about 2 tablespoons of vodka with 2 cups of distilled water and add 15-20 drops of lavender essential oil. The alcohol helps keep the oil dissolved in the solution and preserves the scent.

DIY Lavender Linen Spray

Uses:
  • To freshen up bedding or other linen.
  • Ironing.
  • Occasional whole house spray
If you don’t want to use the alcohol, I’ve read witch hazel is a good substitute, but I haven’t tried that yet! You can also change it up by using different essential oils – rose, citrus, herb, etc.

I've had sisterlocks for 6 years and I have been self maintaining the last 3 years and installing a set of interlocks for my husband. Over the years I have found the following three tools to be most helpful:

  1. Yarn Needle ($1) - The first is a blue yarn needle shortened and treated with heat to make the eye hole wider. I use this needle when starting locs and on my larger locs in the back and center of my head. I usually start the loc by hand and make the final rotations with this needle.
  2. Nappyloc Tool ($20) - (Pictured in the the center) I use this tool on occasion and many swear by it. They sell it in different sizings on the nappyloc website. The only drawback is that it is made of a thin metal and it can occasionally bend out of shape if you use too much force. I've never used the sisterlock official tool, but I've heard that those that use that tool also like the nappyloc tool just as much and actually find it easier to use. Update:The folks over at Nappy N Happy sent me a sample of their thicker gauge loc tool and it exactly what I needed to not only reti my own hair but also my husband's thicker interlocks.
  3. Metal Tapestry Needle ($2) - This is by far my favorite and go-to needle for my retigtenings. Very sturdy and affordable. The perfect length for longer and above the shoulder locks.

Vaginal health is something that women are often afraid to talk about, even with our mothers and closest friends. And yeast infections are one of those things that most of us are unable to talk about because the embarrassment factor super high. The most common over-the-counter treatments for yeast infections, anti-fungal creams and suppositories aren't always effective, may cause greater discomfort and may lead to drug resistance. These also include ingredients I wouldn't put on my skin and hair let alone inside my love pocket. Vagisil, for instance, does not treat yeast, and contains sketch ingredients like methylparaben, a likely endocrine disruptor, and propylene glycol, which may trigger inflammation. A popular gynecologist prescription, Difulcan (or fluconazole) works for only certain yeast strains and can cause side effects like diarrhea, nausea, or even hair loss.

So what are your options? Well there are quite a few holistic health options. I discovered some of these myself during the first (and only) time I got a yeast infection my senior year of high school when I tried tampons for the first time and it was scented. I didn't event notice it was scented. Why must a tampon be scented, that does not even make sense! Needless to say, I paid a hefty price for those artificial fragrances.

With that being said, what are common causes of vaginal infections?

  • antibiotics (they lower the amount of lactobacillus, or good bacteria, in the vagina)
  • imbalance in the vaginal flora (mine was caused by artificial fragrance)
  • pregnancy
  • uncontrolled diabetes
  • weak immune system
  • poor eating habits, including a lot of sugary foods
  • hormonal imbalance near your menstrual cycle
  • stress
  • lack of sleep

During this time I did learn many things about naturally remedying and preventing yeast infections:

  • Vinegar Douche: some women believe in regular douching but I have only done it once (and it was a modified version) to relieve the extreme discomfort of that one yeast infection I had. I do not recommend regular douching for vaginal health (some believe it helps with unpleasant smells) because it disrupts vaginal flora, which may cause infections. In other words, douching destroys not only harmful bacteria, but also the helpful kind that keep yeast under control.
  • Oral Probiotics: can be used to prevent and counteract an active infection. Bacteria isn't bad, the wrong kind or balance of vaginal bacteria is.
  • Diet: Avoiding sugar, white rice or flour, anything fermented with yeast like alcoholic beverages feed the growth of yeast. A diet high in vegetables and fiber is recommended as well as fermented foods.
  • Clothing: Cotton and silk underwear absorb moisture, on the other hand, nylon and other synthetic fabrics hold moisture close to your skin, encouraging the growth of yeast. Avoid sitting around in sweaty gym clothes or a wet bathing suit. Change into dry clothes as soon as possible.
  • Vaginal Steaming: Vaginal steaming is an ancient practice and herbal detox for womb/reproductive system. It is said to help eliminate fibroids, dryness, odor, infection, loseness, itching, yeast, heavy periods, long periods, and cramping. Nspiyahdlife sells these amazing herb mixes to use while steaming, she is an incredible advocate for the practice.
Vaginal care and health is important and it is nothing to be embarrassed about.

chia fruit tea

I'm always looking out for an alternative to coffee. I work in corporate finance, have a husband, two kiddies and I'm an evening entrepreneur, needless to say, I'm occasionally sleep deficient. This hurts me in more ways than one -- impaired metabolism, occasional mood swings, a genuine dislike for early morning sunlight.  And then there is the fact that I tend to overeat for the energy to stay awake during those difficult stretches during the day.

I'm trying my best to get to bed before 3 AM, but on those stretches where my nocturnal nature takes hold and I am inspired in the wee hours of the morning and evening, I make above average food and beverage choices like nutrient rich chia in green smoothies or antioxidant teas.

I conjured up this gem of a drink this morning, and I was feeling super sexy (i.e. energized, focused, and centered). Here is the recipe, give it a try and don't be afraid to modify to suit your taste.

Chia Infused Energy Tea
Nutrient rich and fiber rich chia infused tea.
Ingredients
  • 1 tea bag Lipton Lemon Ginger Tea
  • 1 tea bag Trader Joe's Pomegranate White Tea (substitute with any of your favorite tea's)
  • 2 tbsp Raw Organic Honey
  • 1/4 cup Hydrated Chia
  • 2-3 thin slices Organic Lemon
Instructions
1. Set water to boil 2. Steep 2 antioxidant tea bags in about 1.5 cups of water for up to 5 minutes 3. Add 1 cup of cold water4. Add honey5. Add hydrated chia6. Shake until well blended and enjoy

Prep time: Cook time: Total time: Yield: 2 servings

Side note: I add cold water before adding honey or chia to take advantage of raw nutrients.

Hydrated chia

To prepare hydrated chia seed take 1/4 cup dry chia seeds and mix with 1 cup of water. Shake well and store in refrigerate in a sealed container. I keep hydrated chia on hand and mix into my smoothies.

Benefits of Chia

  • Massive amount of nutrients (in some instances more than kale, spinach and blueberries) with few calories.
  • Considered a whole grain and is very high in  soluble fiber. Soluble fibers help our bodies to eliminate the hormonal excess metabolized by the liver, dumping it in the intestines.
  • Very high in antioxidants, which fight the production of free radicals, which can damage molecules in cells.
  • Fairly high in protein (14%), a higher protein intake reduces appetite and has been shown to reduce obsessive thoughts about food by 60% and the desire for night time snacking by 50%.
  • Chia contains more Omega-3s than salmon.
  • It helps improve the health of individuals with type - 2 diabetes and can help regulate blood sugar.
  • Is recommended for pre-workout consumption because studies have shown that chia can help with athletic endurance.

Looking for a remedy for what ails you? Look no further than your own pantry. Some of the most nutritious foods are great topical remedies and hair treatments.

Try these two DIY pre-shampoo treatments for thinning hair.

Hair Growth: Ginger Infused Hair Oil

Ginger encourages blood circulation which helps stimulate hair growth. Blood flow also directs nutrients and oxygen to the surface, nourishing the scalp and hair follicles.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 spring of Rosemary or a few drops of essential oil (optional)

Instructions
Add grated ginger (and rosemary) to olive oil heated the olive oil on low heat. Remove ginger from heat once it turns and allow to cool. Once cool, strain the ginger out of the oil.

Apply to the scalp for up to 10 minutes and then rinse thoroughly, follow with shampoo.

If you want to keep it simple, you can substitute the freshly grated ginger with 1-2 drops of ginger essential oil. I like going through the process of making from scratch though.

This ginger-infused oil is easy to make at home and can be applied a few times a month. I purchased fine mist spray bottles from here.

Hair Growth & Strength: Coconut Milk Mask

Coconut milk contains healthy proteins and essential fats, both of which boost hair growth.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup coconut milk
  • 3 teaspoons olive oil
Instructions
Combine ingredients, apply the mixture to your scalp and then work the mask through your hair. Massage the mask into your scalp and through the ends of your hair. Wear a cap to allow heat to help with deeper penetration. Leave on for 10-15 minutes and then use a clarifying shampoo to rinse the mask out.
