Most people aren't aware that 80% of our immune system is in the gut. In the age of COVID-19, we have to use every tool in our arsenal to keep our immune system optimal.

Don't let the latest trendy health berry or rare plant that cost $100 an ounce burn through your whole check. You might be passing by and taking for granted some of the most powerful immune-boosting foods in the world. All within the reach of your budget.

Affordable immunity-boosting foods:

1. Garlic

Garlic is not only packed full of flavor, but it’s also packed with health benefits such as lowering blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease. Garlic’s immunity-boosting abilities come from its heavy concentration of sulfur-containing compounds, which can help fight off infections.

A 2001 study published in Advances in Therapy showed that garlic has been shown to help ward off the common cold.

Experts suggest consuming two to three cloves per day. My mother has taken garlic for years when her blood pressure was on the rise or she was feeling the beginnings of an illness. She swears by it.

2. Ginger

Ginger is among the healthiest spices on the planet. Loaded with nutrients and bioactive compounds that have powerful benefits for your body and brain, ginger is known to help with everything from indigestion, menstrual cramps,  muscle aches, inflammation and possibly even Alzheimers.

Due to its strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, ginger may boost immune health.

Although some inflammation is an important part of the normal immune response, chronic inflammation can hurt your immune system, and possibly increase your chances of illness.

Increasing the consumption of antioxidant-rich foods like ginger shots can help fight inflammation and keep your immune system healthy.

Fresh ginger may also be effective against the RSV virus, a common cause of respiratory infections.

3. Onion

Few realize the onions are a superfood. Onions are low in calories and high in beneficial nutrients like vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, have certain phytochemicals that act as stimulants for vitamin C within the body. Vitamin C boosts your immune system by fighting against toxins that can lead to numerous diseases and chronic illnesses.

Onions are packed with immune-boosting nutrients like selenium, sulfur compounds, zinc, and vitamin C. In addition, they are one of the best sources of quercetin, a potent flavonoid, and antioxidant that has antiviral properties as well as histamine regulating effects.

Onions have been used to remedy a plethora of ailments:

  • Sore throat - Onions contain sulfur compounds that fight and promote the expulsion of mucus from airways. Onion is considered to be the most powerful natural antibiotics, which can fight off both viral and bacterial infections, and ease the symptoms of sore throat.
  • High fever - Onions help lower body temperature and relieve body aches caused by fever. Chop an onion into small pieces, put in a glass container. Add drinking water and let sit for seven hours. Drink mixture three to four times a day.
  • Cold, cough and flu - see above for why.
My favorite catch-all remedy is sliced onion, soaked in local honey with ginger and garlic. My dad swears by it for preventing or curing an ailment. Drink a tablespoon regularly.

4. Turmeric

Tumeric has been the superfood of choice for centuries. It helps with pain and inflammation but also  helps
  • fight cancer
  • combat depression
  • improve memory
  • promote healing and kill bacteria
Turmeric helps bolster the immune system by increasing the immunomodulating capacity of the body. Adding turmeric into your diet during periods of stress or during flu season can help give your immune system a little boost. There’s a compound in turmeric called curcumin, which has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It helps relieve soreness. It’s also been linked to a ton of other benefits, like reducing bloating and promoting gut health. Make sure you make the most out of your turmeric by pairing it with black pepper. The curcumin compound isn’t easily absorbed by the body and black pepper has a compound to help.

Tumeric is great in a number of savory dishes but try a superfood drink:

Golden Milk Latte

Ingredients
1 cup of nut milk  (almond, cashew, etc)
1 tbsp of freshly grated turmeric root, or 1 tsp of ground
1 tbsp of freshly grated ginger root, or 1 tsp of ground
1 tsp of ground cinnamon
Sweetener of choice (local honey is recommended)
A pinch of pepper
1. In a small pot on the stove, gently heat cashew milk over low heat.
2. Whisk in turmeric, ginger, and cinnamon until frothy, adding sweetener to taste.
3. Pour in your favorite mug and sprinkle with ground pepper. Done and done!

Staying healthy takes a holistic outlook. Wash your hands, get enough sleep, and eat the right foods.

A DIY herbal hair rinse recipe that nourishes your scalp, increases shine, and strengthens hair naturally.

Most hair care items, even the natural ones, strip the natural oils from our. A vast majority of shampoos also contain ingredients that coat the hair to replace the natural and vital oils that they strip. A great herbal hair rinse features nutritive herbs that feed the scalp for healthier, stronger hair. The apple cider vinegar softens and cleanses, without removing the scalp’s natural oils.

Herbal Hair Rinse Ingredients

  • 3 TBSP dried rosemary
  • 4 TBSP dried lavender
  • 1/4 cup nettle
  • 1/4 cup horsetail
  • 3 TBSP dried basil
  • 3 to 3 1/2 cups apple cider vinegar
  • distilled water

Rinse Instructions

  1. In a quart-size glass jar combine all of the herbs. Cap the jar and shake to mix.
  2. Fill the jar 1 inch from the top with apple cider vinegar. Cap it tightly, and shake well.
  3. Keep the jar in a cool, dark place for 2-4 weeks. Shake daily. After the first few days you may notice that the herbs have absorbed some of the vinegar. Just top your jar off with some more vinegar so that it stays about 1 inch from the top.
  4. After the herbs have infused into the vinegar for a few weeks, strain them with a cheesecloth or a clean old t-shirt.
  5. Store completed herbal hair rinse in a clean glass jar. When ready to use dilute it with 1 part of distilled water. The vinegar concentrate will preserve indefinitely; however water will encourage mold and bacterial growth, so don’t store the rinse pre-diluted with water.

How to Use Herbal Hair Rinse

Mix equal parts of the prepared herbal hair rinse and water together in an empty clean container. Apply diluted rinse to clean, wet locs as leave-in or briefly rinse with distilled water.

Use the following as a guide but you may need less or more rinse depending on the texture and thickness of your hair.

Very Short hair: 1/4 cup infused vinegar to 1/4 cup water
Short to chin-length hair: 1/2 cup infused vinegar to 1/2 cup water
Shoulder length hair: 2/3 cup infused vinegar to 2/3 cup water
Longer hair: 1 cup infused vinegar to 1 cup water

Tip your head back and slowly pour over locs until saturated.

The benefits of the Herbs

A great herbal rinse should be infused with beneficial herbs that help hair in a variety of ways:

Rosemary
Adding rosemary stimulates hair follicles and encourages hair growth while strengthening hair at the root. It is also a slight astringent, which works to strengthen the hair follicles and prevent hair loss.

Lavender
Lavender calms inflammation on the scalp and increases circulation for better growth.

Horsetail
Containing high amounts of silica to strengthen hair strands. Horsetail is rich in calcium, magnesium, bioflavonoids, chromium, potassium, copper, and iron.

Nettle
A wonder herb full of vitamins and minerals. You’ll find vitamin A carotenoids, vitamins B, C, D, and K, as well as chromium, silica, calcium, magnesium, boron and others. By nourishing and increasing the health of the scalp, nettle makes hair naturally stronger and more vibrant.

Basil
Similar to the other herbs in the mix, basil feeds the scalp, but plays a special role as it also detoxes the body by removing toxins and heavy metals. Basil also promotes hair growth as it nourishes with vitamins A and C, flavonoids, and polyphenolic acids.

Apple cider vinegar
An apple cider vinegar helps clarify and smooth hair cuticles – the secret to shiny hair!

Additional Tips

  • Use the herbal rinse bi-weekly or monthly according to preference.
  • Use this hair rinse in-between shampooing.

Seasons change, and so should your skincare regime. If your skin is anything like mine, you'll be going from oily or combination summertime skin to dry fall/winter skin. I highly recommend adjusting your skincare regime seasonally.

Here is my routine, but keep in mind that I live in Southern California (extremely dry climate that is sunny year-round) and I have combination skin (oily skin in some areas of your face and dry skin in other areas).

Morning

Evening

  • Cleanse with Davita Naturals. I've used it for about 5 years now. This all-natural cleanser has gentle ingredients that love on your skin while removing dirt and excess oil.
  • Tone with Neem Tumeric Facial Mist. Alaffia’s facial mist, with balancing turmeric, harmonizing yarrow and regenerative algae, tones and restores the skin's protective layers. Ideal for an uneven complexion and blemish-prone skin.
  • Use a good eye cream like DERMA E to reduce the depth of crows feet, deeply hydrate, firm, and tone the delicate skin around your eyes.
  • Moisturize extensively at night.

Treatments

  • Charcoal Mask - Activated charcoal minimizes the appearance of pores, giving skin a smooth, refined appearance, while salicylic acid stimulates exfoliation. Perfect for those concerned with clogged pores and oily skin.
  • Rose H20 Beautifying Tonic hydrates and corrects the appearance of your skin tone and texture through key vitamins and minerals.
  • Carrier oils like grapeseed oil (for oily skin) and sweet almond oil (for dry/aging skin).
  • Body butter (like NEK.AWA) at night after showering to lock in moisture and take the fight against dry skin to the next level.

Other Factors

  • Stay hydrated. Our bodies are 60% water, and the skin is the largest organ.
  • Use a humidifier if you are experiencing extreme dryness.
  • Exfoliate regularly to help moisturizers and lotions penetrate better.
  • Stick to warm showers and baths. Hot water can dry out natural oils in the skin.
  • Take care of your lips. Exfoliate and use a heavy body butter or lip balm at night. I like using NEK.AWA (great for the entire body).

Each person and body is different, but I recently became aware of the importance of personally managing inflammation after experiencing a series of back pain flare-ups. One of the things I always ask my doctor is: what can I change in my overall lifestyle to improve my health situation or prevent future issues? This is where we had a rather enlightening conversation about managing inflammation.

There has been more social talk about anti-inflammatory medications, food and lifestyles but what is inflammation and why should you care about managing it? Basically, inflammation is your body's response to outside threats like stress, infection, or toxic chemicals. When the immune system senses one of these dangers, it responds by activating proteins meant to protect cells and tissues. Inflammation can be good in certain healthy situations but chronic inflammatory issues can have serious long and short term health implications like:

  • joint pain
  • cancer
  • painful periods / erectile dysfunction
  • leaky gut and other stomach issues
  • autoimmune disorders
  • cardiovascular disease
  • sleep issues
  • has been linked with depression
  • can sabotage weight loss efforts
  • can damage your skin and cause premature aging

Basically chronic inflammation can downgrade all of your sexy and prevent you from living your best life.

Signals that you may have chronic inflammation
  • belly fat
  • high blood glucose levels
  • allergies
  • fatigue
  • digestive problems like gas, diarrhea, bloating, or constipation
  • skin problems like eczema or psoriasis
  • puffy face or eyes
If you believe this could be a health issue for you, contact your doctor. In the mean time here some simple ways to reduce your risk of inflammation:

1. Eat more anti-inflammatory foods and reduce your consumption of foods known to cause inflammation.

Last year, during one of my last rounds with major back pain, I immediately went on a fast where I avoided gluten, dairy, peanuts and sugars. I also upped my consumption of anti-inflammatory foods and I noticed a huge change in the how quickly I recovered. I've been careful with my consumption of foods that trigger my inflammation ever since.

A great anti-Inflammatory diet includes

  • leafy greens
  • salmon
  • walnuts
  • fermented foods—like kimchi
  • garlic
  • turmeric
  • pineapple
  • papaya
  • beets
  • ginger
  • avoiding overly processed foods and refined sugars
2. Careful what you drink

Avoid alcoholic beverages as well as caffeine and consider drinking kombucha, green tea, or make an anti-inflammatory green leafy smoothie with a bit of pineapple and papaya.

3. Get more sleep

A nap pretty much seems to solve half of my problems, not much has changed since childhood. There is some research that shows that a lack of sleep causes inflammation. If you have issues falling or staying asleep, consider
  • drinking sleep tea
  • consider a melatonin supplement (which was a game changer for me)
  • burn a lavender candle or use a lavender essential oil lotion before bed
  •  and stay away from the light of those digital devices like your tv or phone

4. Manage your mindset to manage your stress

Chronic stress can lead to inflammation in addition to many other health issues. If you have stressors, consider ways to avoid and expel them from your life but if its a difficult season (i.e. new parent, new job, or just life) there are ways to manage how you react to stress and create peace and calm, consider:
  • breathing exercises, prayer, and or meditation, try a great meditation app like headspace
  • exercise that non-stressful and improves your health and increases your joy (like pilates or dance)
  • avoid caffiene
  • be in community with people who you can trust and talk to (maybe that is a therapist or a BFF)
  • verbal positivity (talk to yourself, be encouraging and use verbal affirmations with yourself)
Managing inflammation, for me has been a game-changer, and has improved both my health and my skin.

Thank you Tom’s of Maine for sponsoring this post.

Brushing with Tom’s of Maine Luminous White Toothpaste has been a real confidence boost. In the past, during random conversations, I often find myself staring at people’s teeth and shocked at how white their teeth are. Then I think: if I’m staring at their mouth and thinking this, are they staring at my mouth and thinking, “dang her teeth are yellow!” This thought cycle always unnerves me and my words are slightly more mumbled as I do the opposite of baring my teeth.

I will be the first to admit I’ve had a pretty mediocre oral care regime. My parents never hounded me about brushing or flossing, even though I have my Dad’s weak, sensitive and stereotypical British teeth that I did not start to take better care of until recent years. So on top of getting cavities filled, and planning to get adult braces, I am also working to reverse years of staining with a non-abrasive home whitening regime. Since I’m very conscious about what I put in my body and very dedicated to living green and minimizing me and my family’s exposure harsh ingredients and products, I opted to whiten naturally. Here are my favorite ways to naturally whiten my teeth at home:

1.       Toms, because whiter teeth and great oral health starts with the right toothpaste. Tom’s most advanced natural whitening toothpaste, Luminous White, is safe on enamel and safe for everyday use. Luminous White toothpaste uses two types of high cleaning silica to gently and safely remove surface stains. And all of the ingredients are naturally derived, unlike conventional whitening toothpastes.

2.  Whitening Foods provided by mother nature offers as options many fruits, veggies and other natural items as viable options to protect your teeth from decay and keep them from discoloring. These natural foods include:

- Raw Broccoli can naturally clean teeth while eating with nutrients that can coat your enamel to minimize stains while fighting harmful bacteria, and acid erosion.

- Strawberries mixed with baking soda and applied as a paste is another good option

- The inside white portion of an orange skin can be rubbed on teeth.

- Apple Cider Vinegar is a teeth and gum cleanser that not only prevents discoloration but can reverse some yellowing that has happened over time because of the following naturally occurring ingredients: acetic acid, potassium, magnesium, probiotics and enzymes.

On the same note, avoid stain causing foods like wine, coffee, tea, sports drinks, or candy that can cause tooth discoloration.

3. Overall Health Management because acid reflux and other ailments can affect oral health so keeping your overall health intact has multiple cosmetic rewards.

4. Using a Straw can help prevent stains by keeping stain keeping dyes away from your teeth.

5. Monthly oil pulling for about 20 minutes in the morning prior to eating. Oil pulling is an age-old remedy that uses natural clean and detox both teeth and gums and whiten your teeth.

Long-term healthy and whiter teeth can be achieved with activities that can be seamlessly woven into your daily routine, all you have to do is take the first step.

Did I miss anything, what are your favorite natural ways to whiten your teeth?

I was selected for this opportunity as a member of CLEVER and the content and opinions expressed here are all my own.

I don't have perfect skin, but it's pretty darn good with minimal breakouts. Other than the skin care routines I've shared, here are 7 things I (and you should) avoid doing to help secure a clearer and healthier complexion.

1. Consistently eating terrible junk food or food items that can cause an imbalance and derma-logical reactions. Crappy processed food rarely yields awesome skin.

2. Leaving stress levels unchecked. We all face a bit of stress in our lives. Whether it's just when you are stuck in traffic while running late to work or if it is something longer term and more serious. There are ways to reduce and manage stress from avoiding the triggers to mindful breathing techniques. Stress wreaks havoc on your body, from your skin to your overall immune system. Bonus points if you get enough sleep (helps with stress and acne).

3. Washing your face with any old cleanser. It is time to upgrade your knowledge about skin care products and ingredients. Picking cleansers with harsh chemicals and ignoring your skin's cries for change is not a good idea. Make sure you pick a cleanser with aloe vera and avoid those with alcohol as a primary ingredient.

4. Sleep with makeup on. Leaving your makeup on overnight can lead to clogged pores and is a breading ground for acne causing bacteria.

5. Ooze negativity. You can look how you feel. Like in most endeavors, the first step is getting your mind right. Ponder good and lovely things and think of your body (even the skin you may not fully love) as a good and lovely thing simply because it is a part of you!

6. Abuse liquor. Alcohol is a hepatoxin that can cause skin issues and some alcoholic beverages have ingredients that are incredibly bad for overall health, skin included.

7. Constant face touching. Face touching can trigger acne or a breakout if  any dirt and oil on your hands is transferred to your face.

7 Things You Should Never Do If You Want Clear Skin

DIY Lavender Linen Spray

A refreshing natural and lovely lavender linen spray that actually lingers for a reasonable amount of time.

To make you will need:
  • 15 drops of Lavender Essential Oil
  • 2 tablespoons of Vodka or Rubbing Alcohol
  • 2 cups of Distilled Water

The husband and I aren't drinker of alcoholic beverages so I bought a bottle of vodka specifically for this and other DIY household projects (surface cleaners etc). I mixed about 2 tablespoons of vodka with 2 cups of distilled water and add 15-20 drops of lavender essential oil. The alcohol helps keep the oil dissolved in the solution and preserves the scent.

DIY Lavender Linen Spray

Uses:
  • To freshen up bedding or other linen.
  • Ironing.
  • Occasional whole house spray
If you don’t want to use the alcohol, I’ve read witch hazel is a good substitute, but I haven’t tried that yet! You can also change it up by using different essential oils – rose, citrus, herb, etc.

Two years ago, when I decided to stop using toxic deodorants and antiperspirants, it was after much research and only bad experiences with most store-bought natural deodorants.  My journey to finding the perfect natural deodorant has been long, arduous and at times stinky, but finally I’m in a great place.

When I first started, I had to lower my lowest expectations with every new natural deodorant I tried. Two popular brands actual amplified by armpit odor to make me smell like a linebacker who played in two major games without bathing in-between. Other's only worked if I wiped my pits mid-day with soap and water and reapplied, this became real high maintenance at work. On those work days that I forgot, I smelled real unprofessional by late afternoon.

After much trial and error, here is what I learned about natural deodorant:

  • Some of the most popular and readily available ones don't work. I started with those available at popular chain local stores, from brands that make other great natural products like Toms, and they disappointed almost every time, so it is likely that you've had the same experience and don't worry there are ones that work, they just may not be sold at your local Target store.
  • I branched out to making my own and that rocked, but getting the recipe just right was difficult. I discovered that I was sensitive to baking soda when used over time and my first batch was perfect, but darkened my pits caused baking soda burns. My second batch was tweaked with less baking soda and it didn't cause irritation but didn't deodorize as well as the first batch. My sister is not sensitive to baking soda and the first batch worked for her perfectly and the second batch worked well enough. I guess my skin is more sensitive and my body order stronger.
  • There as many to choose from. Just because you only see two or three at your local store, doesn't mean those are the best or only. There are many more to choose from online and at natural food stores
Here are the three best deodorants that I have tried thus far:

  • Primal Pit Paste: Cost ~$9, I bought at my local natural food store but you can find online. Primal Pit Paste is amazing, it works well for both me and my husband. I use a few times a week and can go a day in between without using it because the deodorizing affect lingers. This stuff is powerful and amazing. I especially make sure to wear when I believe I am going to be active, outdoors on hot days or at the gym. This stuff works so well that my husband made the switch to natural deodorant. I do find that if I use every single day across weeks that my armpits become slightly discolored, so I use my next favorite deodorant in-between. This one does not cause my armpits to feel tender and raw.

  • Crystal Essence Deodorant Spray: Cost ~$5, This stuff works pretty well on a person like me with strong armpit odors. The essential oil combinations are not only added deodorizers but give them a real pleasant scent. This deodorant is not as strong as Primal Paste, but it works much better than most. It is not strong enough for a hike in Southern California but works well during a work day in the air conditioned office or to church on Sunday. I alternate between Crystal Essence Deodorant and primal paste to keep my armpits from becoming dark.
  • Home made recipe: My sister loves this recipe. On batch lasts almost a year and it really controls the funk. But, because I have a baking soda sensitivity (my sister does not) it turned my armpits black and it started to become a little tender from daily application. This never happened to my sister and she swears by this recipe, so I decided to list it among the best, but only for those who don't have a sensitivity to the amount of baking soda in the recipe.

When it comes to natural deodorant, if at first you don't succeed try and try again. It is worth limiting your exposure to additional carcinogens or messing with your body's natural responses by blocking your sweat glands. Give natural deodorant another try, you could be one more attempt away from finding your  best natural deodorant.

I would love to hear from you, have you had success with natural deodorant, can you recommend a brand that works?

Never apologize or make excuses for doing what is best for your mind, body and soul. I am vocal about what I won't put on or in my body. I will not be sold snake oil. I will not eat death and smear it on my lips or breasts or locs. I will not apologize for researching,  remembering and confirming that what is placed on the table in front of me or in my cart at the store meets my standards. I will not apologize for being a plant-based black girl.

Some people say, seems like everything will kill you these days, why bother. I ask: would you knowingly drink poison? For those that say yes, stop reading here, for those that say no, consider a few things.

Your Skin is Considered an Organ
Skin is considered an organ because it meets the definition of an organ, which is a group of related cells that combine together to perform one or more specific functions within the body. Skin performs several functions vital to the survival and health of the body, so deserves the label of organ. (source)

If you read this blog, you will see a trend amongst the products I use: the ingredients can be easily pronounced, or found growing garden nurseries. I keep it simple, not every unpronounceable ingredient is a killer chemical, but it's easier for me to track the deadliest culprits and make it a rule to predominately buy products with familiar natural ingredients.

Food Matters

Food matters, some of the most problematic illnesses in developed nations like the United States are often related to diet and lifestyle. Consider diabetes, consider heart disease, consider obesity. Though sometimes heredity or other environmental factors come into play, many times we choose everyday how what we want to die or are working towards a poorer quality of life in our later years, in fact we run to it and invest in it with our hard earned dollars.

I see people all around me choosing not to be an informed consumers and blindly put things in their bodies that may or will cause harm. Sometimes a small shift in my diet to eating more vegetables or less sugar translates into a better mood, more energy, clearer skin, or more focus at work. What you fuel your physical self with matters.

Meat Matters

I'm not a vegetarian, but I am careful about my meat consumption. So often times, I opt to buy  smaller quantities of meat that is of a better quality but cost more per pound. This way I can buy grass fed or local free range but not break my budget.

I've read and seen a bunch of health documentaries with experts consistently stating that we don't need as much protein as we think we do. Noting that there have been multiple protein propaganda campaigns promoting fad diets by folks simple selling ideas that are not inline with health research and fact. When I think back to my favorite dishes of my youth in the Caribbean and in many cultures, meat is added in modest quantities to accent vegetables or whole greens and legumes. There is also some risk to health associated with abusing protein in your diet.

Not only is there risk to your health but also our planet, more than 80 percent of the protein humans consume comes from animals in the form of meat, eggs, or dairy. These animals require a significant amount of resources to become food. If you include the irrigation needed for the feed, 1/3 of a pound of hamburger requires 660 gallons of water to produce. There are also a ton of environmental plagues associated with raising animals for human consumption, including deforestation, water contamination, loss of biodiversity, and desertification.

Everything Will Kill You, So Why Bother?

There seems to always be a new study saying this thing, which was once considered safe, actually does something horrible to your body. Just because this thing is in more that 50% of the products sold at your favorite stores does not mean you should resign yourself to exposure to it. If you found out that you had a near miss with trifling ex-boyfriend who now has a known STD, would you consider rekindling that love affair or would you confirm your tests are clean with your doctor and steer clear of his commitment issues and corresponding Groupon penis. I personally am not a fan of my love pocket itching and burning, so I would recommend avoiding him and any other known toxin to your mind, body and soul.

YOU CAN DO IT TOO

Living a greener more balanced life doesn't have to break the bank, it doesn't mean becoming a raw vegan who throws paint on people trying to run through a Burger King drive-through for dinner. Fact is:

  • Contrary to popular belief, eating more vegetables more affordable than buying snack foods. I can often fill my cart for less than it would cost to fill my cart with random processed food.
  • You don't have to do it all over night. Start with upgrading one meal a day and incorporate it into that week's grocery shopping.
  • You can take baby steps and replace products as they run out, when your sketch lotion or soap runs out replace it with a more natural one. Do it over time and according to your budget.
  • Do your research, plug in to blogs, like mine, or newsletters that will share updates and try keep yourself somewhat informed but don't become paranoid or overwhelmed. Just be mindful and be thoughtful.
Being a plant-based black girl is about being mindful and being thoughtful about what you put in your body. It is an expanded big girl version of self-care.

Why I am a Plant-Based Black Girl

Crazy natural acne remedies worth trying.

1. White Plain Toothpaste
When I was a teenager I learned if I popped a pimple and applied toothpaste to it, it would dry out, heal fast and the scab would peel away without scarring. I later learned that I could apply it without popping the pimple overnight and it would help dry the pimple out and dissipate quickly.

To use the toothpaste method:

  • Use only the white (not gel or striped kind) none-whitening, low or no fluoride toothpaste, it is best to use the natural or organic kind.
  • Apply as the spot treatment only overnight or for at least 2 hours to a clean face.
  • Wash away toothpaste throughly with warm soapy water.

2. Simple Honey
Honey both fights acne and helps to fade scars. Honey can be used by itself or and in combination with other natural ingredients. Honey can heal damaged skin cells and fade scars. Processed honey is not as effective because it does not contain all the nutrients present in raw honey, so for best results, always use raw, organic honey to treat or remove acne scars.

Honey contains natural antibiotics that protect against bacteria that cause acne and heal damaged skin cells. Interactions between the sugar in honey and the secretions from a healing breakout can trigger the production of hydrogen peroxide, which  in theory kills the bacteria that causes acne and naturally bleaches away scars. Honey is a natural antiseptic that minimizes the severity of a breakout, leaving behind less of a scar while being a natural moisturizer.

Honey can be used alone or in combination with other natural ingredients:
  • Raw Honey -  Wash your face and pat dry. Apply a thin layer of honey to your entire face and leave on for at least 10 minutes. Massage skin with wet fingers in a circular motion. Rinse with cool water and pat dry. For best results, leave honey on overnight.
  • Honey and Turmeric - Turmeric is a natural antiseptic and it soothes skin to reduce inflammation. Mix 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder with 1 tablespoon of honey. Apply to skin and leave on 15 minutes. Massage skin with wet fingers for a few minutes to exfoliate and remove dead skin cells. Rinse with cool water and pat dry. Repeat daily.
  • Honey and Lemon - Lemon is also antibacterial and natural bleaching agent that fades acne scars and freckles. Mix equal amounts of honey and fresh lemon juice. Wash face with mild face wash and dry. Apply mixture to skin and leave on 15 minutes. Spritz skin with lukewarm water and massage gently, using circular motions. Rinse with cool water and pat dry. Repeat daily.
  • Honey and Cinnamon - Mix equal quantities ground cinnamon and raw honey Apply to skin and leave on 5 minutes. Rinse with cool water and pat dry. Repeat daily.

3. Aspirin Paste
Crush one or two aspirin and mix with two parts water and apply as a spot treatment to clean skin and leave on for no more 15 minutes. Remove with a clean wet cloth.

WARNING: You do not want to leave aspirin on your skin for longer than 15 minutes. Otherwise your skin will absorb a lot of aspirin into your bloodstream, where it will remain for awhile. Acne is caused by hormonal imbalances, poor hygiene, poor diet, and other factors. Though these remedies may work for some, the remedy will depend upon the cause.

4. Apple Cider Vinegar
Used as a daily toner, apple cider vinegar's natural acids balance a skin's pH and calms acne. I used this for over a year with great success.

These remedies can cure your acne naturally, but keep in mind that results may vary depending of the root cause of your acne.
